WatchVault Condition Grading

In the pre-owned luxury watch market, terms like “Great Conditions” or “Lightly Worn” are often subjective. A faint hairline scratch to one collector might be a dealbreaker to another.

To eliminate guesswork and guarantee complete transparency between buyers and sellers, WatchVault operates under 4 strict grading tiers. We actively curate our marketplace inventory to maintain ultra-high standards:We only accept timepieces that meet our 4 condition criteria.Heavily worn, damaged or compromised watches are strictly prohibited from our website.

WatchVault Condition tiers

1. Mint (Unworn / Factory Condition)

  • Visual State:Absolutely zero signs of wear or handling. The watch appears exactly as it did when it left the manufacturer.
  • Polishing History:100% unpolished.
A “Mint” condition watch, unworn, factory

2. Near Mint (Visually Unworn)

  • Visual State:Appearing practically new to the naked eye. Only microscopic signs of wear may be present upon really close inspection.
  • Polishing History:100% unpolished.
A “Near Mint” condition watch, visually unworn to the naked eye

3. Excellent (Light Wear)

  • Visual State:Shows only faint surface hairlines or light scratches.
  • Polishing History:May have undergone light polishing during routine service without altering original case geometry.
An “Excellent” condition watch, light wear, faint surface hairlines or scratches

4. Very Good (Regular Wear)

  • Visual State:Shows some visible signs of wear, but remains visually appealing.
  • Polishing History:May show minor loss of sharpness on edges from past servicing, but overall integrity remains complete.
A “Very Good” condition watch, minor but visible signs of wear

Why WatchVault draws the line at Very Good?

Unlike other platforms, WatchVault does NOT accept watches rated “Good”, “Fair” or “Poor”. Listings are rejected during inspection if a timepiece exhibits structural damage, component degradantion or aftermarket alterations. By capping our marketplace at “Very Good”, buyers can shop with absolute confidence knowing every watch on WatchVault meets an uncompromising baseline of quality.

Seller tip: Accurate Grading prevents issues

Accurate grading is essential when listing your timepiece. If you list a watch as “Near Mint”, but arrives at the buyer or WatchVault workshop with visible wear, representing a more realistic “Very Good” condition:

  1. The buyer’s mandatory 48-hour inspection window allows them to flag the discrepancy.
  2. Escrow funds will remain locked until a price adjustment is settled or a return is initiated at the seller’s expense.

To avoid these issues, always take high-resolution photographs in neutral, unedited lighting to highlight any micro-scuffs. Honest disclosure ensure smooth transactions and immediate payouts. If you are unsure of your timepiece actual conditions, feel free to send us pictures atlistings@watchvault.itand our team will help you determine the best grading for your timepiece before listing.
